The Anancy Festival, named for Anansi, the West African trickster of folklore, is a celebration of Caribbean-American culture that’s geared toward children and teens.

The festival provides a unique way for youngsters to learn about their cultural heritage and experience a rich collection of stories, music and dance.

An extensive array of musicians, authors and performers will be featured at the Anancy Festival in Kingston including:

– Live simulcast from the Anancy Festival in Pembroke Pines, Florida

– Anancy storytelling

– Short films on Anancy by Laura Tanna, Lukkee Chong, and Rachel Moss

– Exhibit on Jamaican spiders from the Natural History Division of the Institute of Jamaica

– Exhibit of Anancy illustrations by young Jamaican artists

– Anancy face-painting, arts and crafts and spider snacks

– Anancy books and other Caribbean children’s books on sale

Xavier Murphy and Dr. Andrea Shaw are the driving forces behind the festival and its co-founders. Writer and publisher Kellie Magnus joined the team in 2011 to coordinate the first Anancy Festival in Jamaica.

“We are excited to bring this event to Jamaica,” said Kingston co-coordinator Kellie Magnus. “Anancy stories play an important role in Jamaican/Caribbean culture and should be celebrated.”

The annual Anancy Festival promises an afternoon of song, dance, stories and fun. The event is geared toward youngsters, but adults won’t want to miss the unique performances.

The Anancy Festival offers an enjoyable way for people of all ages to experience the rhythm of the island through its dance, music and written word.
